![]() ![]() I just don't care much, personally, is the thing. So yes, ample time for them to have seen Octopath. The Kickstarter for this game was announced in July 2020. The company developing this game was established in march 2020. The development of this game began immediately after Octopathĭevelopment actually began a lot longer after that, so if you wanted to make that point, you could mount an even stronger argument than that by saying: Octopath's reveal happened in September 2017. As I said, it's your prerogative and choice as to how much issue with that you wish to take. It's not that serious in the grand scheme of things. People could (and I'm sure in the months to come, now that this game has gained more visibility due to the stream yesterday, will) argue back and forth in perpetuity about the similarities and differences, but it doesn't really matter at the end of the day.Īny JRPG combining 2D sprites with 3D real time backgrounds and depth of field (which is an obvious, rather than revolutionary or even particularly imaginative frankly, concept for how to move retro JRPG visuals into a more contemporary aesthetic,) is going to be compared to Octopath. etc.ĭuring the event, I literally watched a livestream reaction where people with broad experience in the industry commented, "It's kind of like Octopath visually, but also very different." So it really depends on who you ask and how fine grain you go with the comparisons ultimately. It's using much less lens flare than Octopath, the dynamic lighting isn't as "dream-like," it's throwing in visual features people tend to associate with Suikoden very intentionally (the birds, etc.) One could argue it looks more like a "3D-ified" version of the classic 2D Suikoden games, with less heightened stylization than Octopath. This game is using Suikoden's character design style for the sprites and key art, which precedes Octopath's by literal decades. One could also just as easily argue the opposite, that there are key differences between them and that while at first glance similar, they have distinctive visual features upon closer inspection.Į.g. Completely coincidental visual similarities happen all the time in the arts because most human beings aren't anywhere near as unique in their visions as they like to think they are. Especially, ironically, the traditional turn-based JRPG genre. ![]() It's very difficult to definitively demonstrate clear intent in that. But if more than 4 decades playing and observing video games has taught me anything, it's that there are no creative sacred cows in game or visual design lol.Įvery game you love took inspiration from another game to one degree or another. ![]() As soon as they saw Octopath they started cloning.īut to your larger point - as I said, YMMV in terms of how much this bugs you. You can tell they just loaded up Unreal Engine and tried to clone everything Square Enix did to achieve the same look as Octopath. and these washed out Suikoden developers would have been standing around scratching their balls without Octopath laying the groundwork for them to immediately try to clone.
